High Risk Auto Insurance Scores - Can You Improve Your Rating?

Are you a candidate for high risk auto insurance coverage? Do you know who is considered a 'high risk' driver? If you fall into the high risk driver category you will probably pay more for your car insurance. However there are ways that your high-risk profile can be improved and help to keep your premiums as low as possible. Once you know how insurance companies set their rates you have the inside track on how to make yours a little better too.

High risk drivers are (of course) drivers who have poor driving records but that's not all. If you have had an accident where you were at fault you will be considered a candidate for high risk auto insurance coverage.

But, did you know that speeding or other tickets as well as accidents that weren't your fault can also raise your likelihood of falling into the high-risk category? The theory goes that a single speeding ticket must raise your chances of being involved in a serious accident by 100%. If you have been involved in several car accidents (whether they were your fault or not) you may be suspected of being an unsafe or reckless driver and be a candidate for high risk auto insurance.

What about other factors that can influence your likelihood of qualifying for high risk auto insurance? Your gender might aggravate your high-risk status. Men are always considered as having a higher risk for driving accidents than women. Your age may not help you either. Teenagers are usually considered high-risk drivers too. If you live in the city, again, you fall into a higher risk category than do your country contemporaries.

Your credit history is another factor that comes into play in the high risk auto insurance arena. Yes, your credit rating may reflect negatively on your auto insurance just as it does in other areas of your life! This is because people with bad credit ratings statistically file more auto insurance claims!

Before you start fussing - there are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of a high risk profile being assigned to you. You may need to change the way you behave dramatically to avoid high risk auto insurance premiums. For example, fixing a bad driving history or getting a better credit rating can dramatically improve your chances of shifting gear into a better category. If you can keep clear of bad points for three years or longer you will be considered a better risk.

You can reduce your high risk auto insurance premiums by choosing an older model car, canceling collision and comprehensive coverage, or taking on lower levels of standard coverage.

It may seem unfair but you aren't in a high risk category without some pretty good reasons. Insurance companies do need to protect themselves from drivers who abuse the system. You can avoid paying a high risk auto insurance premium by making better choices and reaping the benefits - not paying for your bad ones. Good luck, safer driving!
